Heat pump cb tripped

Our heat pump 20A breaker tripped this morning. Waited a bit to cool down. It is currently drawing 17.5 A and slowly rising. The breaker is physically warm to the touch after tripping. Data sheet shows 15.4 A running current. Any thoughts anybody?

Is the wire tight in the CB. Other things to look for are weak start/run capacitors in the unit also the blower fan may have a bearing starting to go bad and the unit has to draw mor power.

Found the exact 15/20 A breaker (Siemens) at home depot for less than $12. Replaced, so we'll see if that does the trick. Don't want to think about the next step if it doesn't.

Did you check the voltage coming into the RW? If you have low voltage coming in, the amps will be higher than should be.

Pretty sure voltage is ok, as we have the progressive industries hard wired surge protector. It would have shut down on low or high voltage.

Well, I find I must now eat my words. We were enjoying coffee this morning and the surge suppressor (Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C) shut the Redwood down and the code was PE6, low voltage on Line 2. Pedestal power was still only about 109 volts after restored power, so guess we'll go try and plead with the park to fix. Line 1 voltage is 122. So the original trip must have been because of low voltage. The heat pump was drawing 17.6 yesterday, but today is at 14.4 so perhaps the suppressor saved the day.

I am curious............what is the ampere rating of the circuit breaker for that heat pump?

There you go! Don't you love those things? I wish I would have installed the display.

Guy

That is a 20 A rating for the heat pump/ AC. Both rooftop units are 20 circuits. They put that breaker with a 15 A breaker in the same package.

Mine just popped the breaker today also. I checked the voltage and all is well. I have the unit plunged into my house. I am going to be watching this a little more careful. If I have a continued problem it will be trouble shooting time. It is raining today so I thought I would sit in the house and think about it. There is just something about electricity and water that makes me a little more nervous than normal.

Glad no damage to your rig. The Progressive did its job. I would not be without my Progressive either. Always use it, even when plugged in at home.
