Heat Pump

Has anybody actually been in the RV when the heat pump shuts down for low outside temperature? I was woken up buy noisy change in pitch of the compressor that was loud, then a third change in pitch, then nothing but fan. I thought the whole thing went out when I felt cold air, but all worked in the morning after the outside temp got up to about 50.

I have been using the heat pump since I got to Wyoming. Tonight it will get below 40. I will let you know tomorrow. So far, the heat pump and the fireplace are keeping the RV at 72. With tonight getting into the 20's I will see what happens. Probably should make sure the valves are open on the LP tanks.

Brad ~ did your furnace turn on and the heat pump shut down after a short while ? Mine will start to blow cool air for a few minutes and then it will shut the heatpump down and turn furnace on.

I did like you, the heat pump and fireplace was doing me good the whole trip until that night.

(Careful with your underbelly plumbing - the furnace is the only thing that puts heat down there.)

Vaughan, I was actually using the 2nd heat pump (bedroom thermostat), and it doesn't have the capability to fire the furnace. It just started blowing cold air.

When the temp drops low enough you need to turn the bedroom one off otherwise ti will sit and blow cold air fighting the living room one

Ya, I guess I didn't get the fight because I had the LR off. I really thought I could get through the night on a heat pump - but that noise followed by cold air sure woke me up in a hurry.

My test failed last night. Woke up in the middle of the night and had no water but the trailer was toasty. Flipped the switch to gas thinking I screwed up. In the morning I found that the park had turned off the water. Also, it was 40, so it never got cold enough.

Well thanks for responding back - Mine shut down just under 40 so you might have lucked out.

You might consider filling your fresh water tank and use it to draw from so you are guaranteed water in the morning!

Actually, I had water in the tank, just in case. My only concern now is LP. How long they will last and to me they seem empty.

I was thinking about buying two 40's if I can find them. But I suspect it would be unwise to store them in the basement. Maybe I could store them in the master closet, it is drafty enough in there.

We had our heat pump on last night and it was 38 and it worked fine all night. I only had the LR on so that if it got to cold the furnace would kick on. but it was still blowing hot air this morning at 5am when I got up to go to work. Had the Thermo set at 67 all night. I am praying for a warm winter like last year here in Oregon.

I found my 40lbs at Lowes and they were about $10.00 less than CW. Bought the Gauges on amazon.

When I upgraded to 40 Pounders, I found the best price at Tractor Supply, approx $30.00 cheaper than CW, don't know what the current prices are, but worth checking into.

Not safe to store LP inside. I upgraded to 40# tanks mainly for the gen-set. I kept the 30# tanks and considering securing one them in the truck bed for BBQ & spare.

Don't buy propane bottles, go to local l.p. dealer & rent. We rented a 100# one winter & well worth it.

It's best to travel with full water or fill the tank as soon as you get there. This has happened to a lot of us.

I have 30's now. My thought was to buy 40's in addition. But after thinking about it, It would really be unsafe to carry extra bottles. To really overthink this, I probably don't need any LP in the summer, save for gas for a grill. So, in the summer I would be better off with 2 - 20's. If I ever have to do cold weather again, I will swap out the 30's for 40's before I leave.

I filled the water tank at home in Arlington, TX, main reason, Arlington water has been rated the best water in the country. However, being a newbie, I didn't know about the drain line. By the time I got here, there was no water. I know where the drain line is now.
