Fun Mods - Basement Gadgets

While I had the basement panels off, I couldn't resist adding a few gadgets:

I added a sonic pest chaser to the outlet inside the utility cavity where the vacuum plugs in. Figured it would be passive and would just come on whenever I plugged in. Don't know if they work or not, but we have always used them.

I added a water alarm and installed the remote sensor down on the floor by the utilities:

And the alarm is mounted up by the filter so I can access it to change batteries

And I added a photoelectric smoke and carbon monoxide wireless detector in there by the access door so I can reach it. It will alarm at this detector and in one I installed in the upstairs hall if either goes off. It may be too close to the furnace (CO), but thought I would start there and see what happens.

My wife and I found out the hard way about water leaks. She got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, came back to bed and a couple of hours later I got up and stepped onto a water soaked carpet in the bedroom!!! The valve in the toilet had stuck and since the very small amount of water going into the toilet can't be heard it just kept filling up the toilet until......yep, overflow. Water even went down into the basement area. Needless to say, what a mess. Luckily we were able to pull out everything in the basement storage and let it dry and all of our towels soaked up the worst of the water in the carpet. Then I pulled carpet back and put a fan on to dry the carpet. After that night I couldn't sleep because every time I thought about that experience I had to get up and check the toilet. Couldn't go through that every night so went to a Fleet Farm and bought 3 battery operated water alarms and placed one under each sink and one next to the toilet. They were not expensive and have already alerted us to a leak in our Redwood under the kitchen sink. The drain was not tightened. Thankfully it was not pressurized water so no damage. We also place a shutoff in our water line coming in to the fifth wheel and whenever we leave the coach we turn it off. It's a great habit to get in to

Yep, I also installed one next to the toilet after reading a few issues with that one.

I have always shut the water off when I leave, but now with the ice maker I've kind of stopped. I'll probably be sorry someday.

To be honest with you, I wish I didn't have the ice maker, just another water leak waiting to happen and another item I have to be concerned about when I winterize. I think I would rather turn the icemaker off than not turn my water off.

our icemaker line IS turned off under the sink.... and probably will stay that way...

We like Sonic Ice better anyway and with the residential fridge it will get the freezer down to - 8 degrees !

Ours is turned off also under the sink. It will probably also stay that way or when we get to destination we turn it on, make ice then turn it off under sink.

My icemaker is also off ~ never used it. We prefer the ice from a market. Also, it's one less thing I need to do in the winter.

Gonna have to get some of the water alarms.

i also just turned off my icemaker. One thing I would not have next time around. Takes up too muck space and don't use the ice. I really didn't want it, but got it for resale. Took out the container and stored it in a cabinet to have the extra space.

Wow - lots of folks don't use it. I was all excited about it and looked away from a new Montana because they didn't offer one.

Brad,
Great mods.....and yes, I love my ice maker! I also loved my sewer boom on my Montana. That might tell you something as most hated it and pulled them off. Guess I'm just different!

Thanks Ken!

Redwood had that boom when we were shopping in 2013, and when the Dealer sent pictures of ours delivered I sent him an email and asked where the boom was!

So far we love ours. Summer would not be summer with out loads of ice. We even bring it to parties. Once it cranks up it just keeps on producing. With all this said it'll probably stop working this weekend.

We opted out for the ice maker and purchased the Dometic ice maker from camping world. We get bottled water for $0.25 a gallon no crapy city water, makes the Jack taste great!!!!

I am the ice maker. That is one of the useful things I do .

Seriously we Opt'd out for more freezer space and also the fridge uses less power w/o the ice maker so saves on battery.

That said, I've got to look into the Dometic stand alone ice maker. That might work really well

Thanks!

We have the Dometic (Actually a Magic Chef) stand alone as well. We use it for the long trips and our disabled daughter has taken ownership of the whole operation. As long as I keep her in water, she keeps me in ice Always full coolers.

There was one time we shut the fridge ice maker off and stored the tray to make room in the freezer. About the 3rd day we were able to start using that ice maker again after we used some of the food in there.

We have, and use, the ice maker. Living in this rig fulltime without it is not an option. Have not had any problems with it and we manage to do without the extra space.
