Crank out windows

Has anyone taken the crank out window operators out of the tracks on the bottom? They have a plastic stop in the track that's loose between the arms to limit how far the windows crank out, I want to shorten that piece so the windows open a bit further for better air flow.

I had to replace the window regulator in my bedroom as the plastic rollers were broken during shipping the trailer.


It is very easy if you know how to drill out the rivets behind the knob and have an air operated rivet gun to replace the rivets.


It sounds worse than it is. It took me about 20 minutes once I had the proper tools.

Why do the crank out windows only open about 3 to 4 inches. It doesn't seem to give good air flow. Anyway to make them open more?

That's what I plan to do when we get to stay more than a couple days. It appears there's a loose plastic spacer between the crank arms that could be cut down or maybe removed to allow the windows to open further. I don't know why they open only such a small gap when the arms appear to go much more.

Don't quote me on this because it comes from the lips of a service technician at a dealership. He said that you CAN remove the tabs to allow the window to open fully. He had just replaced the arms on one of our windows where they had bowed and bent while retracting. (had to push the window in from the outside to help it back in)

Update!
Took one of window operators loose by drilling out the rivets only to find out that on the windows with another glass above they now open as far as they can without hitting/grinding against the glass above at the seam. It was a simple job, took longer to gather the tools than to take the operator loose. I think it would work on the window above the bed as they are a single glass, but that's a job for another day.

I agree 100% I even brought it up at the rally with RW. Why can they not supply slider windows so we can get a better air flow on nice days. Any idea what is the drill size and also the rivet size. I'm sure the rivets are aluminum?? Not stainless?? so I can get the rivets before starting.

Fairly sure the drill size was 1/8" & the pop rivet was 1/8" x 1/4" long & the originals/replacement were aluminum. Hope you have better luck!

The problem with Slider Windows, if they are not under an awning you can't leave them open when raining.

As Michelle said I like them so you can leave them open, but they need to open further.

I just removed the plastic insert at the bottom of the windows. They now open about 7-8" instead of the 3-4" original. What a difference of the air flow in the coach now. My only suggestion is if you do this mod keep the track lubed with a silicone or graphite spray. And don;t force the arms when opening or closing. All 9 windows took about an hour or so. And don't waste your money on black pop rivets. A sharpie does a great job.

Wayne, you didn't have an issue with the upper & lower window panes hitting/grinding together when opening further?

Did not notice any kind of resistance or noise. But with you pointing this out I will be sure to go out tomorrow and have a real close look at the joint between the upper and lower panes. Thanks for the info I will let you know what I find. I did not scrap the inserts so if necessary I can reinstall them. Thanks for the heads up..Wayne D
