Carefree of Colorado Traveler Awnings

I believe most of us have these powered awnings on our coaches; some of us only have one but a lot have two identical awnings. I had an occasion to take my basement wall down that disturbed the wiring on the basement wall awning switches which caused our slide awning (not a topper) to not work at all. After some troubleshooting, I had the awnings partially open when a high wind came up in AZ. There are two buttons on the back side of the awning motor enclosure (forward arm on both awnings) that will accept 12 v to retract the awnings to prevent damage in high winds. I have the Dewalt 20V drill package, and used a couple of electrical spade connectors to connect to the emergency power cord furnished in the briefcase of manuals and such during delivery to power the awnings closed. Just want to make all of you aware in case you're in the same situation as I was to bypass the wiring and close your awnings to prevent wind damage.

Jim , you said -
"I have the Dewalt 20V drill package, and used a couple of electrical spade connectors to connect to the emergency power cord furnished in the briefcase of manuals"

The only thing that was in my case other than papers was an extension for the drill... no cables... Can you post a pic of that ??

Joe

Joe, not sure RW is including the cables any more. I have a set of cables, but they came with our 2012 RL. Don't think I got any with the 2016 MB.

I was having problems with our front awning. We called Care free and they no longer have that system, you have to take the two screws out on the main shaft that comes out of motor to get enough slake to get to where the wires are joined on inside of awning arm and jump them from there.

That jumper cable came with my Carefree I installed on my Montana years ago, but I don't remember seeing one in the Redwood. Glad you brought that up Jim! I also didn't realize they changed the design. Nothing worse than trying to figure that out in a windstorm.

Evidently awnings prior to 2013 were the screws on the back of the motor head, after 2013 they spade connectors in the arm. The year of the awning may not be the same as the coach.

We don't have emergency terminals on our 2015 RL.When we called them they told us they don't use the terminals any more unless they changed them again.

Well, I hope I haven't confused all the newer Redwood owners on here. Not having owned a newer rig, didn't know they changed Carefree awning model design. Sorry about the confusion, just wanted to relate my problem with ours this summer. Our RW is a 2013, getting a little long in the tooth. But all we have to add now it the MorRyde IS and the undercarriage will be good to go.

You should have those terminals in the arm though on yours.

yes we have them in the arm. To get at them not we have to take the two metal screws out of the main cross pipe the awning is rolled on pull it away from awning motor gear to release tension to pull arm down to get at the two wires. That is only if awning is in .
