Anode Rod Replacement
The Brad Bug is biting hard...........not really, just a simple task that's bugging me. I replaced the anode rod getting ready for our upcoming trip, and I can't stop the slow leak around the threads. If you read google posts, some say to use teflon tape, others say not, some say pipe dope, others nothing at all. It is down to a slow drip, drip now, is it possible that it will stop when i turn the power on and the water and the rest of the heater are up to temperature. I've done this two or three times, but have not had a leak before. Anyone else have this problem?

Teflon tape or pipe dope are both acceptable. Metal on metal will always leak in that situation.

Teflon tape for me also... Not a problem in 25+ years of using it..

Thats where I store my teflon tape, just inside the door of the HW heater.
This tank sure eats rods though - jee zoots

Get a water softener!! Owned RW & softener coming up on 3 years & only replaced rod twice & the second would've lasted longer. So at $20 a rod it won't take long to pay for a softener.

If we used ours a lot - I would, but everything I do needs to be drained and dried and put away before the work week begins again - a water softener isn't in the cards. Heck, I just put in storage and felt guilty I didn't winterize the RVs as we are not far from that time of year. I'll have to return over a weekend and do that by October.

Recently ordered a new Anode Rod for our RW, it is now sitting at our Daughters house, will pick it up and get it changed at the end of the month when we pass thru.

Almost 3 years and just changed our rod. Was still in good shape but we were getting "that" smell.

Are you Part Time of Fulltime?
What part of the country is you RW used in.
Seems like different areas of the country are tougher on the Rods than others.
It will be interesting to see how ours looks when I pull it the end of the month as we fulltime but most of our travels are in the Eastern part of the country.

I have to pull the anode each year as I have to winterize the RW, I've always had a problem with a small leak after I put the rod back in. I've tried Teflon tape but lately I've been using the Teflon "goop" it seems to do a better job but I still get a small leak that stops after a day or so. Maybe the hot water heater "cooks" the Teflon!
By the way, using a water softener really preserved the anode this past winter compared to the winter before without a softener. We stay in Arizona and southern California where the water seems very hard.

We are full time. Bought our coach in April of 2012 in New Jersey. We have been in New Jersey, Massachusetts and North Carolina with it. We use a water softener which I think helps tremendously!

Sounds like you winterize AND have a water softener. Maybe I discounted the idea too fast. Is it portable or built in? Easy to winterize?

It's totally portable, just set it in your garage, wouldn't put AF in it anyway it has some kind of granular stuff in it.
