Gas electric refrigerators have been the mainstay in the rv industry. In all my years of rving I have yet to replace a fridge. The Atwood and Norco have had problems keeping up in 100 degree weather but all in all have worked great. If
I was doing a lot of boondocking I would prefer the norcold.

Looks like your truck can easily handle that.

yup the big truck has a cat with 500 horses and 13 speed, 342 gear ratio. only problem is it only gets 8 miles to the gallon. So I use the little truck most of the time it gets 12 miles to the gallon when pulling rv. but gets 21 empty.

What I was told by a redwood rep is when not there say 8-12 hours, turn off the fridge. When you get back the drop would be max 3 deg. If you have a Gen and don't want to leave it running all the time get an "AGS" unit. Auto Gen Start. I added it to my MH and loved it. It monitors the temp of the unit and the voltage of the batteries. When either reached the set mark the unit starts up and runs for a preset time period. anywhere from 30 to 90 min. If I recall they are about $400 and you can install it in 2 hours.

Didn't know they would shut back down. Hmm, maybe I'll add one of those, for no other reason than - I can.

Being from da sowth - lot's of trees and overhead power lines would take out power back in the day...
just so long as you didn't open fridge and /or freezer, it would stay cold for a while...

Why it's good to keep all them possums, etc.. so it's full to stay cool longer!

Only problem with the AGS is you need a software engineer to program them

Nah, not really - they do work well even to the point of quiet times if you want

For an extra couple hundred bucks, you can add two more batteries and be able to run the fridge for 2 to 3 days without a problem. I did a test on ours with just the two OEM batteries and ran the fridge for 36 hours and the battery voltage was still at 12.6V.
We will never go back to a Gas/Electric RV fridge again!!

Agree with what M&A said...
(especially the part about never getting an absorption fridge again )
our 38gk had three batteries in it, the two normal ones up front and a third dedicated to the res fridge alone and stored in the drivers side bay under our powered cord reel:

Well, after five years of full-timing and three years of fussing with the Nevercold, it's time to follow the path to sanity and replace the monster. Like most others, we'll go for the Samsung RF18. My question is: in order to remove/replace both the new and old units in a 2014 38GK, is there room to maneuver without either pulling out the slide or moving the island? I've seen no mention of this in the 42,000 (!!!) posts regarding swapping out reefers. If I can avoid paying $2K to pull, I'd certainly rather invest that in good bourbon. Thanks in advance,
Alan

Thank you for this! Our Norcold recently gave out, of course 2 months after warranty. Now this is what we are facing $3500 - 4000 replacement or finding a residential to fit for the 12 cf Norcold. I am frustrated!

There are residential size refrigerators that are dual 110 and propane powered. The Amish often use them. As I recall, Amana used to make them as well as other brands. I did a quick google search and they are still available. So, a propane residential refrigerator is a possibility.
