to operate the water heater on electric do I have to push the button down on the back of the water heater and then push the inside button or just push the inside button on?

You only have to turn on one of the switches to operate the water heater on electric.

Here's what our panel looks like..

from left:
1st - water pump,
2nd - electric water heater
3rd - Direct Spark Ignition for the gas

Your asking the question made me think about ours... seems we've never left it on just electric because the water wasn't hot ?!? Dooh - best test to see if it works next time I go to the storage area

It has been awhile since I have done anything on the water heater itself but if I remember right you have to have that switch on. That one is wired into the water heater going to the element and comes as part of the water heater. You can turn it on and leave it on. The switch in the camper controls the power going to the water heater to control the power to the element. With the switch on the water heater on you can control the electric side with the camper switch. Its a double switch situation, but one is put on the water heater itself by the heater manufacture but the main control switch is put on by Redwood.

That's correct, the switch on wh must be on.

My prior rigs only had the outside switch, so not to break a routine, I still shut off the outside switch and put in the cotter pin while draining the tank before I put it away after a trip.

The switch on the outside is for winterizing. When you drain your tank this will not allow you to turn on the water heater by mistake and burn out the heating element. Turn it on when full andyou start your season and turn it off before winterizing.
