TV and movies from hard drive?

Has anyone with the 42" LG LED HD TV put movies on a hard drive and been able to watch them? What format do they need to be copied at? I would like to get all our movies copied to drive before we get our trailer.
Thanks

Can't help you on the 42" since I don't know what brand it is, but I have an external usb hard drive that I can connect to a usb cable I installed on the back of our LG and can view everything off it...

We've got the 38rL coming, so whatever model they put in at the factory. I want to make sure the TV will accept before I do all the copying. If you can watch movies on yours, then I guess I can go ahead and burn all our DVD's. I'm going to assume all units have the same TVs in them

Don,

I have a 3 TB external drive on which I have loaded a number of films. Most are .avi format, but I also have a couple of others. Haven't taken the drive with me yet, but am planning to take it when we head out in July.

Will check out the TV inputs and get the required cable from the graphics card to the TV. Not anticipating any problem.

Actually they may be different mfg's !
I mean we have two different mfgs in our rv
One is magnavox and one is lg...

Now you may also be able to connect thru the dvd player
(we have an LG 3D!!!)
so look in your paperwork or look at the units to see the mfg and model # of your tv's and surround sound... and do a search online to see the specs...

oops, just reread and caught the BEFORE you get the trailer ! sorry - then I'm not sure what to tell you except I'm talking out of my, er, ah, posterior

I have both optical and HDMI cables running between my Toshiba tv and the LG Blueray. When I play Internet movies or from disk I found it best to connect my MacBook Air via an HDMI cable to the back of the TV and run the audio through the optical cable/setting on the LG.

Connecting the TV and the LG Blueray with an HDMI cable enabled all the surround sound features in the the LG Blueray, such as individual speaker adjustments.

From all the answers, I think I'm pretty safe putting the movies on a hard drive. I have a macbook air, so things should work out.
Thanks all
