Do the brakes on the Redwood have to be adjusted? If so, how?

Blacklion,

The brakes are self adjusting - no maintenance is required.

Our 36RL is in the shop for warranty work. I was told on Saturday that there was a recall on the drum brakes for the unit. First I've heard of that. Does anyone know of a Lippert recall for their brakes, wheels or hubs?

I checked with redwood svc. Only involves 6 coaches and those owners have been notified.

I must be one of the lucky 6 but I didn't receive notification. The dealership has ordered the replacements. Any idea what the reason was for the recall? Edited by: Grandpa

Drum brakes have now been replaced.

Unfotunately, I didn't order the disc brakes on the unit.

Even after replacement and repeated adjustment they are not working properly. At a complete stop, squeezing the break controller and releasing the vehicle brakes, the truck and trailer begins to roll. If the drum brakes were working properly, it should hold steady, correct? Very frustrating and is becoming a safety issue!!

Anyone else experiencing a similar issue??

Sounds like there is no juice getting to the brakes at all. I would be checking to verify that brake power was getting to the plug on the TV and then continue working towards the brakes. Applying the trailer brakes manually should stop you dead if you're on a slow roll.

Good point. The service guy who was working to adjust the brakes was using a volt meter or some gadget to measure the power applied to the brakes and said that was not the issue.

Very disconcerting!

Could the controler be bad in your truck?

I talked to a guy in a park that had a 2012 Ford and they gave up on his factory controller and had to put a aftermarket one in he dam near wore out the TV brakes before they fixed it.

The voltage output on the controller was also checked. They said it was peaking at the proper level to push the brakes. Has anyone else seen this issue with their drum brakes?

I will have the controller checked again!Edited by: Grandpa

If no adjustment how do you insure the brakes are properly being adjusted while self adjusting. My unit slow but not stop when utilizing the manual squeeze on truck controller all set at maximum

I have always looked at it this way. The brakes are self adjusting this means I have to adjust them myself. The auto has not been reliable I check them every so often to verify they are working and adjusted correctly. This is the only way we have found to be secure with them working properly.

RV39MB, I would have your drums pulled and check the shoes for grease, many have left the factory with grease in the drums and on the shoes, now this is assuming you have the standard electric drum brakes.

I corrected the poor braking situation by manually adjusting all 4 drum brakes. First verifying no issue with grease from wheel bearings by removing drums on each axle and reinstalling wheel/tire and as indicated manually adjusted. Braking now is excellent, better than when picking unit up as new. Thanks everyone for the support.

And just think - if you go to disc, it's almost twice as good as what you have now.
