Sleep Number Bed ??

We've decided the time has come to replace the RW mattress.
We're also going to go from the king down to a queen for some more room in the bedroom.

Those of you that have a sleep number or a similar mattress did you go with the brand name or a different one and are you satisfied with it.

Also, since I'm going to need to make a plywood base for it, I'm thinking of making part of it hinged and accessing the middle as storage.
I think I remember someone doing this and if so what lb pressure and size gas struts did you use ?

The sleep number polls show they are either loved or hated

Two of our mh friends both hate it and even asked to test our foam mattress and will probably swap out...

too bad you aren't close enough to them

I have 2 sleep number beds. One we sleep on in the"brick and stick" and the other in the Redwood. However, last fall August when we were considering trading our unit in, we swapped our guest mattress with the Sleep number bed.

While camping here in Iowa, Ginny asked the question......so when are we getting our bed back in here? I'll be winterizing the trailer within the next couple of weeks and when I do, I'll put the sleep number bed back in the Redwood. That way if we decide to head South sometime during the winter we'll have it.

We love those beds.

We like our sleep number bed in the RW, but it is not as plush on top as the one we had in our stick and brick. I did not modify our bed base, other than cut open and installed a door at the foot of the bed. It added a real nice storage space in the middle. The rest of the area under the bed is taken up by plumbing, wires and drawers.

We had a Sleep Number bed in our home and loved it, except for one thing. In the winter when the temperature in the house got a bit cooler, the air inside the mattress also get's cooler. The pillow top did not provide enough insulation between me and the mattress to hold body heat and therefore I would wake up in the middle of the night quite cold. I solved the problem by adding layers of bedding underneath me. Perhaps the new models come with a heater built in.
We sold the bed when we sold the house and now love the foam mattress in the Redwood.

Vaughn, I added the storage at foot of the bed also, it's about 14" wide by about 36" deep between the 2 drawers. I didn't hinge the top, but added a small door at the foot.

Thanks Danny ~ I may go that way as it would be a lot easier.

I used 3/8" plywood to replace that spring board do-dad & it has worked very well, I think 3/4" would be overkill as there are several cross members under there.

Don't forget the floor/carpet of this area moves when the slide comes in. You'll want to put a different floor down if you store anything here and don't want to move it before bringing the slides in.

Ok so my wife and I are trying to figure out the perfect nights sleep. This is the third mattress for us but I never thought the euro thingy Bob could be the issue the whole time. To me it sounds better to have this under your mattress than a piece of plywood. We love our bed to be so plush like laying on top of a marshmallow. I thought if I take this thing out I would be getting the opposite effect. Am I wrong on this????

I am thrilled with our Euro type bed and mattress. Everybody is different, but for us it is the perfect RV bed.

I added a floor in that storage area. Our original mattress was, crap so up graded & the euro frame made it too tall.

When I switched to the sleep number bed in the Redwood. I used 7/16 plywood over the top of the Euro bed frame and attached it with self drilling screws. I cut 2 pieces of wood that ran up either side of the bed meeting over the center beam. I also cut a 1.5 inch sliver of wood to put over the beam to bring it up to the same height of the side rails and then joined the other 2 pieces on top of it. This made the entire bed base flat.

I actually cut a narrow, long strip to fill in the center for our foam mattress replacement too...

didn't want it too high though, would rather roll together during the night rather than off the edges

We have mattress similar to a comfortaire in our home and we had a sleep number in our last rv. DH likes the one in brick and mortar better ...more adjustable. We sold the sleep number since the Redwood has a king bed and sleep number was a queen. So far like the Redwood mattress but when it needs replacing will do the comfortaire.
