Running a corded drill off truck power?

My truck has an inverter built in that has a capacity of 400 watts. Can I run a an impact drill to takes the lug nuts off of a boat trailer?

I'm no electrician, but if I recall that would be just under 4 amps so check you impact. I guessing NO!

If you’re talking about, say, a 1/2” impact wrench, those are in the 7-8’ amp range. You would need something closer to 800-1000 watts. You’re probably better off getting a good 20v cordless impact, they’re cheaper than a 1000w inverter.

Edit: Then you can charge the cordless battery with the 400 watt inverter.

We carry an 18 volt half inch cordless Milwaukie impact wrench which costs about $200. It generates 400 ft-lbs of torque which easily spins the lugs off the Redwood wheels. You can get similar from Harbor Freight for about half the cost.

The cheapest place to buy an invertor is at a truck stop. Years ago bought a 3000 watt for $159 at a Love's to mount in my work truck, I was able to run several power tools with it.

Yeah I was thinking pure sine wave inverter when I said you could get a 20v cordless for less. A modified sine wave inverter is definitely cheaper than a 20v cordless and will power corded tools just fine. Sorry ‘bout that.

don't even try to run a 120 volt impact gun ! it you really need a impact get a 20v dewalt or millwalkee you have enough power to pull off all 4 wheels and install them off a single charge. the biggest draw back is batteries don't last years. If you go down the road of cordless tools stay with lithium batteries they hold a charge longer and don't store them on the charger. Your truck inverter will have enough power to run the battery charger . Option 3 is a medium size 12 volt air compressor with a air tank. Viair has a few option you could consider. Small air compressor will be a waiting game for it to build up air for each lug , the bigger the tank the better. I would say a 5 gallon tank should be enough at 130+psi.

took the advice

Hooked the boat up flat and all and pulled it the three hundred feet to an appropriate power outlet so could use what I already had in the tool box to change it out.

We use to carry a battery powered impact wrench, the battery finally died. Checked price of a new battery and found it was cheaper to buy an electric impact wrench from Harbor Freight. We have a 5.5 kw generator in the 36RL 2017.
