Removed the couch

Well I finally removed the most uncomfortable couch/bed.
I built a 12" high X 35" deep storage box and got a mattress fab company to make me a very comfortable couch/bed. It is a memory foam toper on foam. so now when I snore I can sleep on a bed that rivals the real bed. Also very nice for watching TV. The storage area has the folding chairs that go with the dining table. Happy Days.

Looks great ! I took out ours and had a desk custom built. I then built a surround for it that has space for a few perches and cat condos for our crew. Also has storage and shelves under and on sides for our two PC towers, shredder, printer, etc. turned out very well.
I'll try and get a good picture and post.

The leaf to the right swings down to close off the shelves for travel. Everything clears the slides by about 3"

That looks great. We also have a few dependents, Gus and Mac. Abyssinians. They are going to love the fact that they can see out the window without jacking up the leather.

We travel with three of them. The one in the picture is Murphy. Grey and white, 24 lbs and a suck-up. Will also sit up and beg for treats like a Prairie Dog. Lol
The other two are Miles and Millie. Makes for a truck full when traveling.

Murphy is the one riding shotgun in the picture to the left.

Did you try to work it out with your wife first before you bought the bed?

Nothing to work out. The couch was so uncomfortable that we both thought storage was more important.. also now we have an option for watching TV and naps. We are moving in the next two weeks and then hit the road. Looking forward to meeting up with all of you. It was a good time to sell our home in the Bay Area of CA. $$$$

Because the bed in the sofa was soooo uncomfortable and we knew we could use additional storage space, we did something similar. We removed the framework, springs & mattress (hide-a-bed) from the sofa. I built a box that fits the inside of the sofa perfectly. The top of the box is supported by 3 1x4 slats that fit into notches cut into the edge of the box and the lid sits on top of the box. The sofa cushions sit on the top of the box. The box is totally hidden and the sofa is firm but comfortable. The wasted space is converted to 14 cubic feet of storage. We put extra blankets, miscellaneous items we don’t need on a regular basis, seasonal items. This was done at very little expense and we didn’t lose seating availability.

Sofa storage box

Here are pictures.
Sides of the box are made of 1 x 12 pine (lightweight). Bottom and top are 1/2 inch plywood. Notches for the slats are located in the center of each cushion so they will support the top evenly. The length of the slats need to be long enough to prevent them from moving out of position. They need to fit from the front of the box to the wall behind the sofa.
Feel free to ask questions.
