All of the scales that I have come across except for one don't mention RVs as having to stop, or say RVs excluded. There was one I saw, I believe it was in Neb., that said RVs included, but it was closed. Someday they may become concerned about the overloaded RVs that are on the road, but not yet. The reason that I like to know this information and keep a weight ticket is for my own satisfaction and protection. We were in an accident in Oregon where we totaled the TV and damaged the trailer pretty bad. It was one of those unavoidable and none of the fault was mine, but the investigating officer said something about if there was a chance I was overloaded. I said I could show him a weight ticket that showed at the time I was well within limits, and if he wanted to he could have the trailer hauled to a scale and confirm for himself if he wanted to. Nothing more was said about it.

Mike, you're correct about the road side weigh stations. But I have read (no first hand experience) that if a Trooper thinks you look over weight, he can pull you over and call in a portable scale to weigh your TV and RV, at that point you would need your back-up receipts of upgrades if you were over the sticker limit. We'll be in the situation next week after our Mor/ryde IS install. We've already put on the "H" rated tires (4805 Lbs/tire) so we're going with the 8K IS setup.

Mind sharing the cost of that upgrade?

Approx $2600 for the 7K system and $3400 for the 8K system.

Michelle, thank you for posting the wheel number for your the 17.5" setup on a previous post.. I'm interested in the "ruggedness" aspect of your setup but spec'ing which wheel/manufacturer on-line was holding me back. Still several years from full-timing - so even 7K setup has plenty of capacity. But the larger wheels & rugged tires seem worth the upgrade for peace of mind.

Louisiana State Trooper's have portable scales already in their cars.

Mike, I did quite a bit of research and found that Trailer Tires and Wheels had a good rep and easy folks to deal with, and I also research the HiSpec Series 03 wheels (4850 cap) which have a good rep. So I figured the combo of HiSpec Wheels and Goodyear G114 tires I couldn't go wrong, plus the price was inline with other suppliers. Just wish we could convince RW and others to offer such a combo for these heavier rigs.

Michelle,

If a trooper actually feels that I look overweight before he even pulls me over, there's a good chance that my diet isn't working all that well.

Anyway, that's good info. My research led me to the same combo because it seems like good choices are pretty limited. Good luck on the Mor/Ryde install. Hope you'll post pictures after you guys try it out.

I just weighed my trailer yesterday while fully loaded and full of fuel. My freshwater tank was 1/3 full, black tank 1/3 and both grey tanks empty. I consider my trailer to be on the heavy side since I have a slid-in-slide, washer/dryer and generator. The weights were much lower than I respected.

My axle weight was 12,820 so I still have plenty of room for more gear should I decide I need it.

Gross weight 26,500
steer 5,280
drive 8,400

I'd have to weight my truck alone in order to give that to you which I didn't do. Keep in mind my drive axle weight is heavy because I have a 35 gallon fuel tank in the bed of my truck as well as an aluminum rolling bed cover which together weighs about 550 lbs. I also carry more tools than most, have 40# propane tanks and I carry anything I can think of without any regards to the weight.

Ah - I thought maybe you had a truck weight already.

I've got my truck weight off the scales a month ago, just need to finish loading the rig and weight it all.

Next week when I get home I'll weight the truck full of fuel so I can get an accurate pin weight. I believe my pin weight is around 4000 lbs

Jim, that's my problem. Since I have to carry my business and my leisure clothes I think I carry more than most women.

Jim, we're running about 4K of pin on our RL, but we're loaded heavy as we've been living in the RW since mid Oct. Our actual gross is pushing 17K,with13K onthe Axle ratings, so part of the reason for the 8K IS upgrade and the 17.5 H tires.
