Insurance While in Storage?

I friend speaking to his insurance company yesterday was told that his motorhome was not covered when in storage. I was surprised and wondering if this is true....Ian

Hmm, that's weird. Wonder if it is covered under homeowners when in storage.

In some states, when in a commercial storage area, the storage companies insurance e company supersedes your private insurance. At the same time you must still carry liability coverage. It's an insurance nightmare leaving you standing in the middle. From what a family member has told me(an agent), the insurance company can't deny your claim as many storage facilities have a disclaimer on insurance claims. However you Will be fighting the claim for years. Find another insurance agency. If everyone is stored on your property, your homeowners policy covers the unit. However some states require that you surrender the licence plate for the insurance company to take all insurance off the unit.

I have been an insurance agent for over 35 years, specializing in auto, home and RV insurance (only in California). First, the standard homeowners policy does extend to trailers usually with a maximum value of $2,000-$5,000 depending on the policy. This is limited to a utility trailer, certainly insufficient for our Redwoods. A homeowners policy will never cover a motorhome as motorized vehicles and their parts are excluded.

An RV policy should indicate where the RV is stored. There is no coverage problems or restrictions that I have ever seen in a policy. Just be certain to disclose its garaged location.

Lastly, some companies allow the suspension of collision coverage during storage. You should NEVER suspend comprehensive (other than collision) coverage. This coverage includes fire, theft, vandalism etc.

I am totally unfamiliar with any storage facility providing 3rd party coverage in our area.
