We only have the one heat pump and for some reason I thought that even though they are real heat pumps, they still had a heat strip in them...

no matter, they worked fine on Sat night when it dipped into the 40's where we were !

Our RW is the first RV we have owned with a Heat Pump.

Since we bought off the lot, we only have the one A/C unit that is a Heat Pump.
We have been in the low 40s the last couple of nights and the single Heat Pump has done a great job.

On our FL the rear A/C unit over the bedroom is the heat pump unit, between the rear Heat Pump and the Fireplace in the front living area, we have been very warm and toasty.

We did test the LP Heat unit to be sure it worked but have not needed to use it yet.

15,000 BTUH cool - 5,600 BTUH heat each unit. Attached is the datasheet if interested.

They are FANTASTIC! Our Texas Dealer talked us into the 2nd one when we ordered because he knew we lived in Colorado. For vacationers, they are awesome because we are typically mild weather users.
John,

Good question - and I had to read more. The Redwood heat pumps are actually 15,000 BTUH cooling AND 15,000 BTUH heating, which means the heat pump produces approximately 2-1/2 times more heat than a heat strip, which is consistent with the brochure. I was incorrect stating the heat was only 5,600 BTUH. But that leads to your comment...

There is an optional 5,600 BTUH Elect-A-Heat electric heating coil in the return air plenum that has a trade name "Chill Chaser". According to the attached manual, if the temps get below 40 and the heat pump has to shut down, the Chill Chaser comes on as a substitute until the furnace can kick in. I do not think our Redwood's have this option, but I'm not positive.

Brad, you always come up with good info but I'm glad you're not my employee when you chase all this info down on company time

We went to bed last night with both heat pumps on. We woke up this morning the outside temperature was 38° And the heat pumps were blowing cold air. Will it do damage to the heat pumps if they run when it's below 40° temperature or frozen from the cold.

I am not aware of anyone doing damage, there is just not enough heat in the air for the heat pump to work. The question I wonder about is I always thought that when the heat pump stopped producing heat the gas furnace would start. Might just be an urban legend....Ian

The switch over to Gas from the Heat Pump is controlled by the thermostat.

I can find so little info on the actual operation of the Thermostat in our RW, I am not sure of it will switch over to gas heat when the heat pump stops working due to cold weather below 40 degrees.

There are other model / brand Thermostats that will switch over to backup heat automatically.

Our gas will come on if the temperature span exceeds 5-10 degrees between the thermostat setting and actual temp. The furnace should have come on.

When the heat pumps shut down, they just turn off the compressor, but the fan stays running. Your furnace may have actually came on a few times, but heat pump fans may have drowned out the noise.

From experience I just look to see what the forecast is for the night... if they say the lows will be below 40º I put it on gas heat otherwise i leave it on HP.

I agree with Brad, the furnace will take over, but there is a big temperature difference inside before it does.
