GVWR increase

I was noticing while looking at SOB's, that the GVWR is published at 18,000 when they have their standard 8,000 lb axles.

If you choose the 8,000 upgrade option when ordering a new Redwood, will the vin plate show 18,000 GVW or will it still just show the 16,500??

Mine shows 17500, limited by the G614 tires. I had to ask, because it came from the factory as 16500. They sent me the correct stickers through the Dealer.

If you get the H Series tires, you should actually be 18500, unless limited by the 18000 lb pin box like mine has.

The current 2016 Pricing Guide states that the 8,000 upgrade comes with H tires. It would be interesting to see someone who has the factory 8,000 with H tires here on the forum and what their plate says.

I would agree that it is probably limited by the Trail-air Pin...

Sure seems strange that you had to notice and have them changed. You would think that they could have gotten it right the first time..

I see on another thread that you determined your pin weight. It was in writing on your receipt. Did you weigh your truck first to and then do the math or get it some other way?

Ya - I think we might have been the first year they were offering the 8K axles and it just never dawned on them, or the Rep actually told me when we ordered that he pulled one of the ones in progress and re-axled it so it could be done in 4 weeks (and it was). Maybe that was true and they just never re-worked the vin and titlework, not sure. They actually relabeled it twice. When I first questioned it, they sent the Dealer 17,000 lbs and he replaced the stickers. I called the Rep and he discussed with Engineering and sent out 17,500 after rechecking. Both times, RW was very good about it and didn't hesitate to make it right. Leanord was our Rep and he was super through the whole process, since the day we ordered. I think there was one other 8K guy that had the same issue but I think they resolved it. When they sent stickers, it included all of the updated yellow cargo capacity stickers, as well as the tire sticker. My cargo capacity is 3,898 which is handsome for a 5er in this market. Unfortunately if you upgrade after production with IS or even new axles, you don't get the benefit of the higher titled GVWR. I'm all for loading them up at the factory.

The only difference was my original sticker had G614 Load Range G for the 4 + spare (which was an option then), and somewhere along the line the spare now shows to be Load Range E which is what they went to the following year (spare only). No worries to me, but I do still have a Load Range G spare.

Yes, I first weighed the whole rig on the CAT scale, then pulled away and dropped the trailer and then weight just the truck. The second weigh is free if I remember, you just have to tell the clerk. Come to think of it, I need to weigh this truck. The weight I have was my 2008.

We had to get a replacement because they listed ours as having 7K axles. With the corrected tag it's listed as 17.9K, don't know why it's not at least rounded up to an even 18K

Sounds to me like RW doesn't really know what the Gross should be and depends on what numbers the person printing the Tag hits.

So if I upgrade my 7k axles to 8k IS and get H Tires, is there anyway to re-certify the RW? How important is that sticker and where does it come into play?

I don't think you can recertify it through the manufacturer, anymore than folks that start adding springs to their 3/4 tons and want to call them 1 tons. You are still labeled a 3/4 ton. However, there may be individual states that allow you to title with the upgraded GVWR. For some reason I was under the impression Florida had a system to do that.

Advantage of aftermarket would be peace of mind and resale. Advantage of RV manufacturer install would be peace of mind, resale, and registered GVWR capacity.

Brad,
That is the best argument yet for ordering a unit with the 8K axles.

I agree with Brad ~ our unit was originally built with 7k axles and drum brakes. 16,500 GVWR. It was a stock unit, purchased off lot.

I've since added 8k MOR Ryde IS, Kodiak Disc Brakes and some other stuff. Weight sticker still says 16,500 but I've got the peace of mind knowing I'm good for at least 1k more than that and if I decide to go to 17.5and H rated even more.

If I was ordering new one ~ no brainer to order 8k with H rated (it would still go to MOR Ryde for an IS )

It could be overkill on a 31SL but that is exactly what I did. 8K axles with H tires and Disc brakes from the factory.

I have much better peace of mind being from a mountainous region and a DW who likes to take her stuff.

Wow, a 31SL with 8K Axles, 17.5 Tires and a 17.5K GVW Rating, with that kind of carrying capacity the wife can take everything including the kitchen sink

Since I couldn't get the sticker on our 36RL changed after adding IS and G114s, I removed the sticker, but had my Mor/ryde paper work showing the addition of the 8K axles. I would have to go out an get the Reg for the RW, but I don't believe Florida puts any weight numbers on the Trailer Reg. In FL the TV is Reg for what ever gross weight you want to put on it, where as in New York iit's limited to the gross on the door sticker.

That was when Lucy was collecting large rocks as souvenirs at every stop they made. Dezi told her to get rid of them all so she hid them under the couch, bed, and in all the cabinets! It really pulled down on that Merc.....
