Gen Set install

Well bit the bullet and we now own a 2015 38 GK. Nice unit with a year left on the warranty. But need to get a Gen installed. The unit was originally ordered IMO as a park unit and has the induction cook top with res fridge and no gen. Looking for someone who can do the install. There is NO gen prep done. So it needs the whole install. Metal cabinet - transfer switch - tank (if gas) etc. Looking for some one either north east US, Ontario, along the 95 or the Elkhart area as this will be our main area of travel between now and this fall. Have been told by Cummins in Elkhart it is done all the time and they can do it but now I'm trying to get the price down. All suggestions will be great.

Congrats on the new purchase. Norwall has the lowest gen prices I have seen. Check with Ford truck guy who is having Tiara Rv install one for him and sounds like a good deal. They are around Elkhart somewhere

Congrats on the new 38GK... they are sweet looking campers . .

I recieved a quote from Tiara RV to install a 5.5 Onan for $4700.00 + tax.... I since decided to up to the 6.5.. They did not get me the total for that yet , but said it would be $800-$1000 more...

I will assume your numbers will be at least another $1000.00 or more.... There is a decent amount of wiring to be done... Way back when I was courting the Cardinal folks , I saw a lot burner and asked the dealer about adding one to a non ready trailer... They gave me a quote of $8K for a 5.5

Thanks...We hope she will be good to us for many years
That is correct Onan quoted around that price 8k. They also suggested a gas 7k as it is more juice, more reliable in cold winter and uses less fuel than propane. What do you think?? I will call Tiara tomorrow as we are planing in going to the rally in August and I understand they are in the same area. and i just looked up Norwall and at least I will get an idea what they are charging for labor.

I'm not familiar were the gas tank would be mounted in the RW but if I had a choice since I have had both gas and LP... I would go for the gas if in easy and safe location. You will get double the hours with gas.

We have had a 5500 and 6500 over the years.

I saw the install that Jayco uses last weekend. the Gen is to the left side of the opening/cabinet like ours. Then the steel tank measured say 15" wide by 15"h x 20" deep. it was about 15gal. then to the right was the batteries and hydrolic. It looked like a nice install. Thanks i think we will go with the gas.

Wayne - if $$$ permit, Onan also makes a 6500 Diesel genset that is the same size as the gas/propane. About another $1k but would give you a non-volatile fuel and virtually no risk of CO.

I currently carry a portable 3k gen but if I go installed it will be diesel.

Am I taking for granted. If I have the prep done by a shop the work would be the same for a gas or a diesel. transfer sw - cabinet - even the tank (as long as only the correct fuel gets used in it). that way I can have that done and try to find a gen at a good price and possibly go to a diesel .
does anyone know...Is the galvanized enclosure a code requirement or is it for sound only??
For as I see it all the rest is straight forward. find the feed from the shore power before the panel. Split it with an auto transfer switch and run the "Y" cables to the gen. from there the control to the upstairs and install the fuel tank and gen. I realize I'm making it sound simple but is that not the basic install??

ok, I am assuming the unit is used and you say it has a year left on the warranty. Is that an extended warranty? Redwood warranty all parts on the Redwood only apply to the original owner. Or am I reading the post wrong?

According to The Redwood site, The remainder of the original 2 year warranty can be transferred one time to a new owner with their form and $250. When we bought our unit it was already 2 years old and we are the 2nd owners. The 2+5 was for the original buyer back then. Even the +5 didn't apply.

I know he is wanting to add a generator. But on his 2nd line he stated he bought a nice used unit with 1 year left on the warranty.

Yep, I read somewhere where the original 2yr warranty is now transferrable to a 2nd owner. There is no 5 year warranty anymore, and from comments by owners, there never really was a 5 yr warranty.

Wow, wish I had that option when we bought ours. We bought a 2012 in April of 2012 that was used. No option for warranty at that time.

The original post was to find out who / where i could find a deal on installing a gen when there was no gen prep done. I'm leaning towards a gas or diesel. But for now i want to get the prep done. I even think i could do it myself but i worry as to the issue if a license is needed?? or a stamp of some kind. The only thing that i might have trouble with is the galvanized enclosure. And does anyone know if it is actually needed for as i see all the specs these Onan units are zero clearance. Unless it is for a vapor issue.

As for the warranty I was mentioning that it had 1 year left. I DID VERIFY with redwood and it is transferable for $250.00.

Congrats on your GK; you'll love it! We have the same with the Denali. We added the 5.5 propane Onan with prep for 7.5k. I opted for the propane as we don't expect to do much dry camping. Just convenient to use to cool off coach when traveling, emergency etc.

I think the galvanized enclosure is required by code. Perhaps more as a heat/fire break. Not sure if you would need an electrian to install the transfer switch and wiring. The generator itself is self-contained, not too complicated to hookup.
