Disc Brakes

When I ordered my 36RE, I made the mistake of not ordering disk brakes. Has anyone had them added to their unit? and by whom?

Had ours done at MorRyde when we did the IS. Kodiak brakes. $3100 installed. Unbelievable difference in braking.

Like you, our Redwood doesn't have disc brakes as it was a show unit, I didn't spec it from the factory.

I had disc brakes (Mor Ryde or Dexter, I've forgotten) on our last two Titanium 5ers and they worked well. I ran into a Redwood owner at the Tucson KOA a few days ago who was representing Titan (who make disc brake kits) at the Escapees rally in Tucson. He recommended that the best time to do the conversion is at the time you need brake maintenance/replacement.

He mentioned (and I was aware) that there is a short delay, about a second, between applying the brakes and when the pressure comes up on the discs resulting from the time it takes for the pump to spool up. It didn't represent a problem for me, the braking with discs is much superior to the electrics.

Vaughn...........I assume that price was for the entire MorRyde IS and disk brakes, not just the disk brakes. Is that correct?

Nope, $3100 would be disc brakes only. Complete IS and Disc could run approx $6200

Wow.........I did not realize that they were that much! I ordered mine with our 2012 36RL back in mid 2011 and forgot how much the option cost. I just knew that I wanted the disk brakes and upgraded wheels/tires when I ordered.

The Disk brake option 11/16/2012 per the Redwood Retail MSRP Price Sheet was $3,850, not counting any discount negotiated.

I believe the MSRP prices actually went down after that, by about 18% overall.

When I was considering ordering a new 2014 I believe it was a $3,100 option (MSRP). I knew by reading this forum that if I bought a used one it would have to have disc brakes and G tires. Luckily the guy I bought it used from did not even list these options on his advertisement. It helps to be informed and this forum is a great place to start when buying used or new!

I sell the Titan Disc System. Have done multiple Redwood. Price is $1700 + installation. I have a system going on in So. Ca. at Alfateer's in Fontana. Installation $800.
80% of the units I sell are DIY installed. We are the only company that offers a complete DIY kit.
There is no performance difference in the disc brakes Kodiak, Dexter or Titan. All of the performance difference is in the actuator. There are 3 manufacturers, Titan, Dexter & Carlisle. Titan uses a 5 piston pump while Carlisle & Dexter use a 3 piston. Titan generates 70 cu in per min. while Carlisle & Dexter generate 38-40 cu in per min. Response time to activate (250 psi) is .3 sec on Titan and 1.0-1.3 sec for Carlisle & Dexter.

There are multiple finishes offered on the disc brakes.
1. Standard Automotive Finish which will rust very easily.
2. E-Coat which is the OEM Caliper & Rotor, offers reasonable protection against rust.
3. Dacromet which offers the best protection and used in most salt water marine applications.
4. Stainless Steel offers the best salt water protection at a premium price.

All of the systems I sell are Dacromet with Stainless Steel pistons & sleeves.

Hello Titan Guy, you were the one I met at Lazy Days! I'll be talking to you about a conversion down the road.

Al, Sorry I missed you on Wednesday. The last day of the Escapade had me leaving early. Wednesday when I got back there was a Redwood 36RL parked next to where you were. Very nice fill timers based out of So. Ca.

FWIW, the average price of a Disc Brake install at Mor/ryde is $2700 plus tax. It can vary some if they need additional parts to make everything fit.
