Air Compressor

I am considering adding an air compressor to take along on our trips. With the tires needing 100+psi the small 12v ones are a joke. I am considering a small pancake 150psi compressor. My question is this. I am considering placing this inside the crawl space after I take down the dividing wall in the under garage area. I want to build a wood pedestal to mount the compressor on and bolt it down. Then I will take the air hose and the electric switch and relocate them over by the door where I could turn it on and off and have a quick connect for the air hose. This is a 110v unit so there is no exhaust or any problems that I can think of. Has anyone considered this or done this? It would not take up space in my garage and move the weight more to the back of of the 5th wheel. There is electric on that side of the wall to power the unit. Thanks for any suggestions.

I think that's a pretty good idea. This time last year, I had my wall down and the table saw out, getting ready for some modifications. The phone rang and I had to tend to some emergencies and never got back to the project.

There's a lot of wasted space behind that wall and I was going to install a water manifold as well as build recessed cabinets in that area with one being for my air compressor. It wouldn't be hard to put an air chuck by each wheel opening, one by the pin box and one in the basement service area for blowing out the water lines.

Good luck and post some pictures when you're done

Actually VIAir has many good 12v compressors that will do the job...
just depends on what speed and flow you need...

I opted not to go full blown as not thinking we would keep the rw, but purchased this one.
Most of the time I don't carry it as EVERY station I stop at for fuel has air right there

Jhardin - that's an excellent idea! Those compressors take a lot of room. You have me thinking now if maybe I shouldn't do that myself. It would be nice just to have a quick connect and switch at the entry door to the basement that you could couple a hose into.

You might try a timed switch. I did something similar to what you are talking about at my house with the giant compressor in basement and retractable hose reel in the garage. It holds air pretty well, and occasionally I would forget to turn the switch off and it would slowly drain down and never failed to start and cycle about 2:00 AM. With some encouragement (OK downright demands) from Dory that I put a timer on it, I used one of those bathroom fan type with the 5 buttons for varying time spans.

Good idea on the timer, I will look at that and I agree that they kick on when your in bed and asleep. Ha. I have a nice hose reel that holds 25' of hose, thought of putting that in the back area too. Then just keep a 50' smaller diameter extension hose to reach my truck tires or the trailer tires.

The one problem I see is, how do you drain the water that collects in the tank?

That's a good point. You would (should) remove the drain and extend it down through some slow point you can access from outside.

I carry a donut style compressor in the basement that's rated up to 150 PSI so I can pump up those G rated Goodyears. While putting it behind the basement wall would create more space I like to use the compressor around the house when doing trim using a brad nailer.

I am considering putting the compressor in the front cargo area (we don't have a genny in there). I have a small air tank lying around, I'm thinking about running air lines from the compressor to that tank to then to the wheel area and installing chucks to make airing up the tires an easier job.

That's also a great idea - little more work but it would be convenient.

This is the compressor I have - High CFM and fairly light and does the job on these G614s.

Hey Brad!
that's the same one I have and linked to the Amazon page in a previous post...

Had a red one that I broke from Sears and ordered a new one...

Ya it's a CMB15. I got it on Amazon based on recommendations from Michelle and Ann.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like it after coming from this little guy I had before:

3 gal. 1/3 HP 100 PSI Oilless Hotdog Air Compressor

The porter cable is a belt drive with fast recovery, and delivers 2.0 cfm compared to may old one at 0.6 cfm. What a difference in recovery.

AA, I have the same compressor except it is Red and says Sears on it.
You are right, lightweight and quick recovery, handles those GY trailer tires with ease.
I put a long hose on it so I can run it sitting up in the front storage bay and reach the truck and trailer tires.

I would have liked the Red

I ordered parts for a dishwasher from Sears, and in my usual way I never installed them and the dishwasher caught on fire last month. I bought a new one, and started grumbling about the $300 pump I never put in and Dory pulls up Sears policy and holy buckets - up to 365 days to return parts! I like Sears.

Yes, Sears had a return policy for a long time - return anything, anytime, any condition
Their lifetime tool warranty has replaced my ratchets many times

Oh, and on the compressor, I've got the red one if you want the case from it

Well I got the new compressor installed and it works great. This was quite a chore and would not recommend it for most. Sure is nice to have it in and done. I hope the pictures come through.
